In Niger, a country largely covered by the Sahara Desert, over half the population struggles to find water for their daily needs. Some walk miles to access even unclean water, carrying it home in buckets on their heads. Others build wells in dry soil that often collapse during the rainy season. By reinforcing existing wells and digging new ones, our workers are bringing life to peoople in a dry and dusty land.

With the $10,000 we provide, 10 entire communities will have their lives transformed.

Circle Drive Church has a lot of special people who attend here. The famine in Africa has brought a number of them to the forefront.

Here are some of their responses to the famine.

Score a Goal Against Famine - Facebook Page

Because soccer is a sport loved around the world and because just last summer South Africa was the host of the World Cup, Saskatoon Adult Soccer has decided to use the sport we all love to make a difference in the world. Over the next week, the 2900+ registered soccer players in Saskatoon will be raising pledges for goals scored. The goal is to raise $175,000 to be given to the Red Cross.

If every player gets only 3 pledges of $5/goal then we will reach our goal. Donations can be made to any registered player in the SAS. Cheques should be made out to the Red Cross. Donations can also be made at the Saskatoon Adult Soccer office at the Soccer Centre on Attridge Dr.

The Canadian government has pledged an additional 50 million in aid to help countries in East Africa cope with the crisis, and they have also stated that "each dollar Canadians give to a registered charity doing work in East Africa will be matched by the federal government through the East Africa drought relief fund. The program is retroactive to July 6 and will run until Sept. 16, after which the government will decide how to allocate the funds."

Please consider donating to a registered charity today and help double the efforts to relieve the suffering of the most vulnerable in East Africa. Also, please invite your friends to view this group.

Famine Early Warning System Network - East Africa Region Report

Households in pastoral and marginal cropping areas of the eastern Horn continue to be the most food insecure in East Africa. Most households in these areas are facing Crisis to Emergency (IPC Phase 3 and 4) levels of food insecurity due to a delayed and/or erratic onset of the March to May rains; significantly below-normal rains; deteriorating purchasing power; and, in some areas, limited access to markets and to humanitarian assistance.

Famine Map Horn of Africa

The performance of the March to May rains in pastoral areas of the Mandera Triangle has been very poor to date, with rainfall deficits between 10 to 50 percent of normal. Consequently, there is acute scarcity of pasture, browse, and water, increased livestock clustering at water points, rapid decline of livestock productivity and value, and worsening pastoral terms of trade. Food security is likely to deteriorate to Emergency levels through September.

In the southeastern marginal cropping areas of Kenya, significantly below-normal yields are expected due to the poor performance of the March to May rains, along with major price increases starting in June/July. As most households will become market dependent, food insecurity is expected to deteriorate from Stressed to Crisis levels beginning in July.

Belg season crops have nearly failed in the belg crop-producing parts of Ethiopia, including SNNPR. In addition, production of sweet potato, a transitional crop consumed during the lean season in parts of SNNPR, failed this year. Crisis levels of food insecurity are expected to continue until the meher harvest in October.

Famine in Africa: Global mismanagement of the first order
by Brian Stewart - CBC News

One of the most striking aspects of this latest famine in the Horn of Africa is the irritated, even fuming, response of so many readers and viewers to the humanitarian crisis.

A significant minority, at least, seem to feel that another round of emergency aid in East Africa is simply too much to ask for, as little there is ever likely to change.

I wish we could talk.

I don't buy such utter pessimism. But I do sympathize with the fatigue and frustrations that repeated failures to prevent such killer droughts in that part of the world have given rise to.

Famine spreads across Africa
With 38 million facing starvation, "business as usual will not do"
By Ernest Harsch - UN Africa Recovery

On a scale not seen in Africa in nearly two decades, famine is once again stalking the continent. According to estimates by the UN's World Food Programme (WFP), as many as 38 million Africans are living under the threat of starvation, and many will succumb if emergency relief does not reach them in time. As of mid-2002, famine conditions were concentrated mainly in Southern Africa, but by the end of the year they had emerged just as severely in the Horn of Africa, and on a lesser scale in several countries in West and Central Africa.

The United Nations declared a famine in two regions of southern Somalia amid drought and conflict that have left 3.7 million people, almost half the country’s population, in need of humanitarian assistance.

Famine exists in the Bakool and Lower Shabelle regions, Mark Bowden, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator for Somalia, told reporters in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital. The food- security crisis in the Horn of Africa nation is the worst since a famine in 1992, when 300,000 people died, according to Action Against Hunger, a New York-based humanitarian organization.

Official Famine

A famine is declared when

  1. malnutrition rates among children exceed 30 percent;
  2. more than two people per 10,000 die per day;
  3. people are unable to access food and other basic necessities

Malnutrition rates in the affected areas are “extraordinarily high” and it’s likely that tens of thousands of people have died, most of them children, Bowden said.

At least 11.3 million people in the Horn of Africa are in need of food assistance because of drought, the Rome-based World Food Programme said today. The crisis in the region ranks as the “highest global humanitarian priority,” it said.

Starcrown Global Relief is composed of a group of self-employed businessmen and women living and working in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. They have developed a number of unique fund-raising methods that will make them a major charitable resource at home and abroad. Starcrown-Global-Relief-logo

To help other organizations financially, funds will be given on the basis of availability and highest score on our local or international scoring system.

There are two major objectives, which will be considered in every case:

  • Are people becoming independent?
  • Are root causes of poverty being dealt with?
Starcrown has projects going on in the following Countries:
  • Mexico
  • Philippines
  • Ecuador
  • Tanzania
  • Kenya
  • Haiti (2010)
  • Malawi (2010)

As they venture into a new country, they make contact with a well known pastor with a growing ministry. They work with this pastor establishing a Multifunction facility that will serve as a:

  • church on Sunday,
  • school during the week
  • work shop
  • soup kitchen
  • dormitory
  • guest house.

Starcrown Global Relief's (SGR) goal is to acquire enough land to allow a good sized garden so that the people can be self sufficient in food production.

The soup kitchen will serve two functions, one to provide food to the children in this and surrounding schools and to teach proper food preparation.

The dormitory will provide temporary living quarters for those in need of a place to stay.

The Guest House will allow us to bring in teachers to instruct the locals language skills, trades and health issues. It will also allow us to bring in nurses and doctors for the cost of airfare.

Starcrown Global Relief is always on the lookout for new projects at home and around the world.
